As an ESL tutor with over 10 years of online teaching experience, I apply a student-centered and flexible approach that integrates several established ESL methodologies to meet the unique needs of each learner. My teaching style draws from Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Task-Based Learning (TBL) to prioritize real-life communication and fluency through meaningful interaction. I also incorporate aspects of the Direct Method to encourage thinking in English, and the Lexical Approach to help students build natural, fluent vocabulary use.
For learners who need more structured language support, I include techniques from the Grammar-Translation and Audio-Lingual Methods to strengthen grammar accuracy, pronunciation, and understanding of language rules. This eclectic approach ensures that every student—whether school-aged, a teen, or an adult professional—receives personalized lessons suited to their goals and learning preferences.
My lessons typically follow a clear and engaging format based on proven frameworks such as ESA (Engage–Study–Activate) and PPP (Presentation–Practice–Production):
Engage/Presentation: I begin with warm-up activities or context-setting discussions to spark interest and connect lessons to real-life situations.
Study/Practice: We focus on specific language points—grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation—using interactive exercises, multimedia materials, and guided practice.
Activate/Production: Students use new language freely in communicative tasks such as role-plays, problem-solving, or discussions, promoting confidence and fluency.
I also integrate elements of Task-Based Learning, where students complete purposeful tasks (e.g., planning trips, writing emails, or solving problems), followed by feedback and reflection. Lessons are adapted for all proficiency levels and age groups, ensuring a balanced focus on accuracy, fluency, and confidence.
